What is Respondus?
Most online exams require students to use Respondus LockDown Browser to access them. Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor is a custom internet browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard, enhancing the integrity of test results.
Optionally, exams may require the addition of Respondus Monitor as a proctoring tool. A webcam is required if your instructor is using Monitor.
Install Respondus
To install and use Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor, please use the following link: https://download.respondus.com/lockdown/download.php?id=345136956 .
Note that this link is specific to NCC and must be used to access your exam on Blackboard.
Take exam using Respondus (devices other than Chromebooks)
- Run the Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor browser application from your computer.
- Do not try to access the exam through your normal web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari).
- Log into Blackboard from the Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor browser, navigate to your course, and open the exam to complete it.
Note: If using a screen reader, the screen reader application must be opened before launching Respondus. The use of a screen reader will not interfere with Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor's capabilities.
If a Blackboard test requires that Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor be used, you will not be able to take the test with a standard web browser. Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor is a web browser separate from IE/Edge, Firefox, Safari, etc. You will encounter a "password required" page if you try to take the test from a regular web browser.
Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor should only be used for taking Blackboard tests.
Using Respondus on a Chromebook
A Chromebook extension for Respondus LockDown Browser/Monitor is available for exams delivered in Blackboard Learn/Ultra. The extension also supports Respondus Monitor automated proctoring.
Installing the Chromebook Extension:
- To install the new extension to a student-owned Chromebook, students will need to use the regular RLDB installation link for NCC. NOTE: students will NOT be able to search for the app directly from the Chrome web store.
- The LockDown Browser installation link will direct students to the Chrome web store, at which point they should select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension. A short video is available here. Ensure that your Chrome OS version meets the Respondus requirements.
Taking exams on Chromebook:
- Navigate to your course in Blackboard using Chrome browser.
- Use Chrome browser only – you will not be able to use Respondus LockDown Browser with any other browser.
- In the course, navigate to the exam. You will be able to see what tests require LockDown Browser by looking at test names.
- Click on the exam name to begin.
- Once you access the test, it will look and behave like any test taken in Blackboard. You will see the LockDown Browser bar across the top.
- Once you have completed the test and checked all your answers, make sure you click Save and Submit.
- Upon test completion, you will see a Respondus message indicating that the test is complete.
- Click the Continue button to exit LockDown Browser.
